Your Disaster Supply Kit should be able to sustain you for at least 3 days but the Department of Emergency Services (DES) strongly recommends 7 days.
Your Disaster Supply Kit should include the following:
- 1 gallon of water per person per day
- A change of clothing for each person
- Battery powered radio with extra batteries
- Bleach and disinfectant
- Cash
- Extra house keys and car keys
- First aid kit
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Food, water, and supplies for pets
- List of contact names and phone numbers
- Manual can opener
- Personal care and hygiene items
- Photocopies of license, insurance polices, birth certificates, passport, credit cards, etc in a waterproof bag or portable container
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape
- Prescription and Non-prescription Medications (re-fill prior to hurricanes, winter storms, etc.) and eyeglasses
- Ready to eat canned meat, fruit and vegetables, canned/boxed juices, milk and soup, food for infants and adults with special diets, and high calorie emergency snacks
- Sleeping bags or blankets
- Small tool kit
- Toys, books, puzzles, and games
- Waterproof matches
- Whistle
Remember in preparing your Go Kit, not everything from your Disaster Supply Kit will go, just your essentials and 3 day provisions.
